Metonin Injection 10 mg/ml

    Storage:
  • Before opening: Store at controlled room temperature (15°C–30°C / 59°F–86°F).

  • After first puncture: Store at 2°C–8°C (36°F–46°F), and use within 90 days.


Composition :

 

  • Active substance: Maropitant (as Maropitant Citrate) – 10 mg/ml

  • Excipients: q.s. to formulation


Indications :

 

Dogs

 

  1. Treatment and prevention of vomiting, including that induced by chemotherapy or motion sickness.

  2. Prevention of vomiting (except that induced by foreign body obstruction).

  3. Used in combination with supportive therapy for managing vomiting.

Cats

 

  1. Prevention of vomiting and reduction of nausea.

  2. Treatment of vomiting, in combination with other supportive measures.


Mechanism of Action :

 

Maropitant is a neurokinin-1 (NK1) receptor antagonist, blocking the binding of substance P in both the central nervous system and peripheral NK1 receptors in the gastrointestinal tract, effectively preventing vomiting.


Dosage & Administration :

 

  • Dogs (≥8 weeks) & Cats (≥16 weeks)

  • Route: Subcutaneous injection

  • Dosage: 1 mg/kg (0.1 ml/kg) once daily

  • Duration: Up to 5 consecutive days

 

Additional Notes :

 

  • Administer at least 1 hour prior to situations likely to induce vomiting (e.g. travel, chemotherapy).

  • Can be given the day before chemotherapy for prophylaxis.

  • May be combined with other veterinary treatments based on clinical needs.

  • Consult your veterinarian for case-specific adjustments.

 



Side Effects :

 

Common:

 

  • Pain or swelling at the injection site

  • Vomiting or hypersalivation at higher doses (used for motion sickness)

 

Less Common/Rare :

 

  • Lethargy, decreased appetite

  • Diarrhea

  • Allergic reactions

  • Incoordination

  • Convulsions

  • In cats: panting, muscle tremors, abnormal posture (e.g., unable to rise)

 

Note: Effects typically resolve within 24 hours, but may be prolonged in pets with liver or kidney disease.



Drug Interactions :

 

Use with caution alongside:

  • Chloramphenicol

  • Phenobarbital

  • Erythromycin

  • Ketoconazole

  • Itraconazole

  • NSAIDs

 

Metonin is highly protein-bound; caution should be exercised with other protein-bound drugs (e.g., anticonvulsants, behavioral medications).



Precautions :

 

  • Not evaluated in breeding animals, or in cases of gastrointestinal obstruction or toxin ingestion.

  • Use with caution in hepatic impairment (metabolized by CYP3A, CYP2D15 in dogs and CYP1A in cats).

  • Monitor closely when used with CYP enzyme inhibitors or other highly protein-bound medications.
